Tips to Keep Your Washing Machine Functioning Properly

The Maids • Nov 28, 2014

No washing machine which can last forever, they all have a limited lifespan. However, you can ensure your washing machine’s has a long lifespan with peak functionality by maintaining it properly. Below are some tips on how to do just that:

Place It on Level Ground:

For your washing machine to work well, it should be placed on level ground. One way of making sure it is level is by using a carpenter’s level. Adjust the machine until the bubble is at the middle. Ensuring the machine is level will keep its internal parts functioning correctly.

Check Fittings and Hoses:

To prevent water waste and also potential flooding accidents, it is important to ensure that all fittings and hoses are not cracked or loose. Go ahead and replace them with new ones if they appear faulty in the slightest. In fact, it is a good idea to replace them after every 3 years even if there are no visible signs of wear to avoid any potential issues.

Use Fabric Softeners and Detergents Sparingly:

Make sure you are using the correct amount of your cleaning agents, as excess grime and soap scum can accumulate from overuse. This will help promote the lifespan of the internal parts of your washing machine that can be corroded by some of the detergents.

Clean Interior Build-up:

There are cleaners designed for this task that are available wherever you buy your regular clothes detergents. However, there is also a way to clean your washing machine with a cleaning agent you already have. Simply fill the machine with hot water to its largest load level, add 1-2 cups of bleach to the water, and run the washer for its longest cycle.

Keep Exterior Parts Clean:

Accumulation of dust, soaps, and bleaches can affect the surface of your washer negatively. To avoid that, you should keep the exterior parts and surfaces clean by wiping it once or twice per month.

Finally, before embarking on any of these maintenance practices, review your owner’s manual to make sure that you don’t damage your washing machine. And if you would like assistance with all your housekeeping needs, then do not hesitate to contact The Maids of Rhode Island, in Coventry, RI.
